Academic Writing

A four-day course for PhD students

Become better at writing scientific texts in English

WRITE CLEARLY AND PRODUCTIVELY IN ENGLISH & DEVELOP YOUR OWN TEXT

Content:

Our academic writing course provides you with practical and useful tools that you as a PhD student can use in your writing process. You will quickly see a clear difference in your texts, regardless of your academic and linguistic background.

You will learn to analyze scientific texts for their rhetorical strengths and weaknesses and give and receive feedback on your own and others' texts. The course includes writing exercises based on the different sections that a typical research article contains (e.g. abstract, introduction, discussion). We also do concrete writing exercises to help you become better at writing more persuasive texts (by creating clarity, flow and coherence). The course alternates between writing exercises in groups and instruction and discussion in plenary. We use peer feedback as a tool throughout the course.

Focal points are:

    • Good writing routines

    • Syntax

    • Targeted argumentation

    • Correct grammar and appropriate vocabulary

I had a very productive time, learned about writing, and enjoyed the social aspects of this retreat as well. It was well structured without being overloaded, and, thus, leaving sufficient time for deep work.It could be a good idea to have something like this as a regular event, i.e., annually.

Thanks again for an effective presentation workshop.

Last week I attended a CBS workshop where we pitched our PhD project to a panel of judges and I won the award for best pitch.

So thanks a lot, for the powerful tools and for getting me to reflect on the keys of presenting.
